Who are the Boston-area Wellesley College alumnae?

The members of the WCAB are a group of Boston-area alumnae that have made the active decision to support and strengthen the Wellesley alumnae network. In the membership year ending August 31, 2007, 10% of Boston-area alumnae joined the club. We would like to thank all members for helping us to reach this important milestone! Wellesley graduates from the 1940s and 1950s have been the most supportive decades of the club, followed by . . . graduates from the 2000s! 17% and 15% of Boston-area graduates from the 1950s and 1940s, respectively, joined the club last year, followed by 11% of graduates from the most recent decade.

All classes since 1925 are represented in the nearly 4,500 Wellesley alumnae in the Boston area. Graduates from the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s make up nearly 60% of the alumnae population, with approximately 900 alumnae from each of these three decades remaining in the Boston area. Graduates from the 1960s and 1970s constitute another 25%.

President's Letter:  Happy New Year to All!

January 2011

“At Wellesley your education extends beyond the four years you are here on campus - it lasts a lifetime.”  www.wellesley.edu

Wellesley prides itself on educating women for a lifetime.   Years ago, as a young admitted student, a small cynical voice in me questioned whether or not this statement could be true.  But I bought into it and have reaped its rewards many times over.

This letter is the last one I write as president of WCAB.  I wish to thank the alumnae community of Boston for having the confidence in me to serve the club in this capacity.  The appointment came at a time in my life where I had stepped out of the paid work force to manage the 24/7 demands of family life.  It’s been tremendously rewarding for me to contribute meaningfully to a board and to work with such motivated, talented alumnae and Wellesley staff.

I am particularly proud of how the club has evolved over the past two years.  We’ve worked hard to restructure committees and improve processes to ease workloads and make serving in a leadership capacity very manageable.  We’re also using technology more effectively to connect alums through our own website, www.wellesleyboston.org, and social media.  And the wide range of programming offered by the club is a testimony to the ways the club works to accommodate the wide range of interests and needs local alumnae have.

As we begin transitioning the club over to the new leadership team this spring, I encourage all local alumnae to reach within and tap into WCAB’s alumnae community.  Whether it’s joining the board, sharing your professional or personal expertise, auditing a class, or posting a blog, ALL alumnae have something to offer.  It’s a powerful network, but one that relies on the collective strength of its participants.   Please join us and reap the rewards.

With sincere thanks and gratitude,

Jamie Scarborough ‘87
