Join us as for light snacks and refreshments as we discuss Tricia Tunstall's Changing Lives.

“A compelling, readable book that is part history and part social activism, [Tunstall] uses Dudamel's youthful exuberance and enthusiasm for music and these programs as an example of the way that music education can be a tool for social transformation.”

The story of conductor extraordinaire Gustavo Dudamel, and the music education program, El Sistema, that led him to success. When Gustavo Dudamel, at the age of twenty-eight, ascended the podium at the Hollywood Bowl for his inaugural concert as conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, he immediately captivated the hearts of his audience, just as he had the minds of music critics who designated him a modern-day Leonard Bernstein.

In Changing Lives, the maestro's story becomes the entry point to an equally captivating subject: El Sistema, the music education program that nurtured his musical talent, first as a young violinist and then as a budding conductor under the mentorship of its founder, José Antonio Abreu. What began in Venezuela has now reached children in Los Angeles, New York City, Baltimore, and cities around the world. No matter the location, the overarching goal of El Sistema is unwavering: to rescue children from the depredations of poverty through music. Part history, part reportage, this book reveals that arts education can indeed effect positive social change.

Note that WCAB has two separate book clubs: one that meets in the suburbs and one that meets in neighborhoods closer to Boston. This posting is for the WCAB Boston Book Club, but all are welcome to attend. Join your fellow WCAB members for this engrossing evening of drama.  Featuring a compelling and surging pop rock score, Next to Normal shatters through the façade of a suburban family dealing with the direct and indirect effects of mental illness. Winner of 3 Tony Awards and the 2010 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, this intense, emotional and ultimately hopeful musical makes a direct grab for the heart with its story of a family coming to terms with its past and bravely facing its future.

As a special bonus to the performance, we will be treated to a special backstage tour at the end of the show and will have a member of the production speak to us at the pre- theater reception.  The pre-show reception is a buffet of finger sandwiches and desserts.  Alcoholic drinks are not included but will be available.  Tickets are limited so don’t miss this exclusive opportunity for WCAB!

“Next to Normal” hurts so good.  The smiles it engenders are the marveling kind, etched in tears. The emotional rhythms of this exhilarating show, winner of the 2010 Pulitzer Prize for drama, do not correspond to the frivolous fare that all but defines the modern American musical. It’s a work that sings from a bruised heart, not a contented one.  But that doesn’t mean it’s a downer. Far from it. With an achingly poignant score by composer Tom Kitt and lyricist Brian Yorkey, “Next to Normal” seeks to find a melodic language for a wrenchingly everyday ordeal: one woman’s up-and-down journey through mental illness.   The Washington Post
